Congressman, meet straight jacket; straight jacket meet Congressman.
One U.S Represenative from the state of Georgia is hoping on that right wing by employing Hitler references as a campaign tactic against Democratic President-Elect Barack Obama. The congress man Paul Broun stumbled his own little Godwin’s Law moment, insists he is not comparing Obama to Hitler, but says that he has great anxiety about “that type of philosphy of radical socialism or marxism”. Broun is right , it does sound “crazy and off base”.
I agree that we should always be skeptical of any leader and speak truth to power, and keep our leaders in check. Our system of checks and balances needs to be excersized at all levels just as our founding fathers and mothers intended. But comparing nearly anyone to Hitler (even Dick Cheney and the concept of pre-emptive war) is way off base and more then borders on the absurd. Obama has reittereated time and again his love and devotion to America and the need for personal responsibility and openess in government. Somebody needs to tell this guy the campaign is over.
“It may sound a bit crazy and off base, but the thing is, he’s the one who proposed this national security force,” Rep. Paul Broun said of Obama in an interview Monday with The Associated Press. “I’m just trying to bring attention to the fact that we may — may not, I hope not — but we may have a problem with that type of philosophy of radical socialism or Marxism.”
Broun cited a July speech by Obama that has circulated on the Internet in which the then-Democratic presidential candidate called for a civilian force to take some of the national security burden off the military.
“That’s exactly what Hitler did in Nazi Germany and it’s exactly what the Soviet Union did,” Broun said. “When he’s proposing to have a national security force that’s answering to him, that is as strong as the U.S. military, he’s showing me signs of being Marxist.”
Also I am no political theorist but comparing Hitler and Marxism is like comparing a worm to a fish. Hitler himself was anti-Marxist and anti-communist. He in fact viewed communism as part of a Jewish International conspiracy and that it was the Marxists as well as Jews in Hitler’s deranged mind that caused Germany to loose World War I and were therefore were the enemies of Hitler and Nazis. ![]()
