1843: Charles Dickens classic Christmas tale “A Christmas Carol” was published.

1916: The French army successfully pushes back German forces at the World War I battle of Verdun.

1940: Musician Phil Ochs is born.

1941: Adolph Hitler becomes the Supreme Commander of the German Army.

1964: The South Vietnamese governing regime is ousted yet again and replaced with Nguyen Khanah.

1971: The highly controversial Stanley Kubrick film “A Clockwork Orange” based on the novella by Anthony Burgess premieres.

1999: U.S president Bill Clinton is impeached by the U.S house of Representatives for his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
