1776: Thomas Paine’s classic essay “Common Sense” is released.

1870: John D Rockefeller, who would eventually become a symbol of wealth and corporate excess establishes Standard Oil.

1920: The League of Nations opens with its first meeting as a body by approving the Treaty of Versailles, ending World War I.

1922: Sinn Fein founder Arthur Griffith is elected head of state for the newly free Irish state.

1927: The classic motion picture golden era film Metropolis first premieres.

1941: The Lend Lease Deal is first brought before the U.S Congress.
