Holocaust survivor, Congressman, and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Tom Lantos (D-CA), dead at age 80.

U.S congressman Tom Lantos (D-CA), who became the only survivor of the holocaust to serve in the U.S House of Represenatives, died on Monday at the age of 80 from cancer of the Espophages.

Lantos revealed his illness in January and decided he wouldn’t run for another term in congress in 2008. In the congress he was well-known for his advocacy of political and social freedom as well as human rights, a passion that likely emanated from his experiences in amidst the grim carnage and horror of Nazi occupied Hungary.

A native of Hungary, as a teenager Lantos witnessed the occupation of his country. He survived, having reportedly evaded the Nazis twice. Soon after World War II, as the ruins and ashen debris left in the dust of World War II’s fury, Lantos headed to America.

Studying economics, he eventually became a professor and served as an analyst of international affairs at times.

In 1980, he was elected to the U.S House of Represenatives, and would be re-elected several times. His record was staunchly progressive and was a member of the House Progressive Caucus, and he became a champion of political freedom and Human rights, especially in regard to global affairs.

In 2007 he ascended to the position chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Commitee, a venue that suited him well.

Lantos is survived by a wife,three daughters, as many as eighteen Grandchildren, and two Great Grandchildren.
