The Straight Talk Express is in the Shop………

…… McCain is driving the Oldsmobile of political opportunism.

Remember the John McCain of 2000 who would be straight up with the press. Who brought out the best in people as the Republican challenger to George W Bush. Who was easily accessible and who talked about the issues, only to get maligned and battered by the innuendos and rumors disseminated by Karl Rove?

Well that John McCain is gone and in his place is a more hard nosed Republican, trying to placate the support of the 28% of the American people who align themselves with the Bush administration. Although he maintains a more moderate position on climate change and is against torture, and campaign finance reform. But who remains a staunch supporter of the Bush Administration’s economic policy, the continued occupation of the War in Iraq, and has been seeking the advice and support of some of the same Bush allies who had disparaged him years ago, as well as some social conservative figures (including an anti-catholic gay basher who is eager for the rapture to come and a Reverend who believes that the main objective of America is to destroy the Islamic faith (though I don’t recall seeing that in the Declaration of independence or the U.S constitution).

Anyway lately McCain has been calling for a clean campaign. However on the Daily Show the other night, literally almost in the same breath of reiterating his desire for a clean campaign, McCain then defended his use of saying that Barack Obama was endorsed by Hamas. He repeated that allegation today.

CNN Political Ticker:

“It is very obvious that Senator Obama shares nothing of the values or goals of Hamas, which is a terrorist organization,” McCain said, “But its also a fact that a spokesman from Hamas said that he approves of Obama’s candidacy. I think that’s of interest to the American people.”

How about that “clean campaign”? Either McCain forgets that in the sentence preceding the Hamas Obama comment, that he called for a clean campaign, or that he is playing such a clearly opportunistic game of balance between rallying the Conservatives while still trying to come off as above politics. Its is so Nixonian of him. One can start to see him morphing more and more into a pathetic Rovian character a little more every time he makes one of these baseless assertions.
