Oh He did Not! Oh yes He Did!

Retiring U.S Senator and Iraq War critic Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE), has just owned Conservative loudmouth Rush Limbaugh. Another reason to like Chuck Hagel.

CNN:

(CNN) — As his Senate career nears its end, Republican Chuck Hagel isn’t holding back when it comes to criticizing members of his own party — including conservative talk radio hosts.

“We are educated by the great entertainers like Rush Limbaugh,” Hagel said Tuesday during a speech in Washington, according to the Huffington Post.

“You know, I wish Rush Limbaugh and others like that would run for office,” a sarcastic Hagel continued. “They have so much to contribute and so much leadership and they have an answer for everything. And they would be elected overwhelmingly. [The truth is] they try to rip everyone down and make fools of everybody but they don’t have any answers.”

Now this shouldn’t be how one chooses cabinet positions, but I have said before that President-elect Obama should select Hagel to be his Secretary of Defense. The two men have a personal friendship, but as Hagel has shown with his willingness to criticize his own party when he disagrees with policy, one would assume that he would be willing to criticize Obama as well should the occasion arise. He has served on both the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senate Foreign Relation’s Committee. With the exception of Iraq and Foreign policy (where he breaks with the neoconservative stance his party has appeared to embrace), he has been a strong conservative in terms of his voting record, and would show Obama is willing to embrace those on the other end of the political spectrum. He, like Obama seems to want to end the occupation of Iraq, and reconstruct America’s diplomatic fundamentals in a post Bush/Cheney world. Not to mention Hagel himself had fought in a war and after eight years of having a cadre of draft dodgers who would go out of their way to keep themselves and their children from being sent into war, but are all too eager to send other people’s children and neighbors into wars.
