“Joe the Plumber”: To Hell With the First Amendment, I Wanna be Happy in War Time

In Journalism, media, stupidity on January 12, 2009 by Editor Z

What is weirder than “Joe the Plumber” becoming a journalist? Saying that Journalists shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near war, when he himself is now a “journalist” with a conservative blog reporting on war between the Israelis and Palestinians.

So what does “Joe” think reporters are doing wrong? Well they are reporting? What is “Joe’s” proposed solution; blind unconditional obedience to the government in a time of war and ignorance, because ignorance is bliss. Unfettered power and a blindly obedient people uninformed and kept in the dark, except for propaganda? Its not like that has ever led to anything bad happening (except Hitler, the holocaust, World War II, totalitarianism).

“I’ll be honest with you: I don’t think journalists should be anywhere allowed war. (sic) I mean, you guys report where our troops are at. You report what’s happening day to day. You make a big deal out of it. I think it’s asinine. You know, I liked back in World War I and World War II when you’d go to the theater and you’d see your troops on, you know, the screen and everyone would be real excited and happy for ’em.

Now everyone’s got an opinion and wants to…down soldiers. You know, American soldiers or Israeli soldiers…I think media should be abolished from, uh, you know, reporting. You know, war is hell. And if you’re gonna sit there and say, ‘Well, look at this atrocity,’ well, you don’t know the whole story behind it half the time. So I think the media should have no business in it.”

Once again the blind hate conservatives feel towards the media which they blame for all the world’s evil. I am not saying the media is perfect and they make their share of mistakes and have their flaws (such as hiring you for starters), but they are vital to the survival of any democracy to even have a chance of survival. Its people like this guy who are willing to allow the government to think for them no matter what. It may lift a burden off of you for awhile, but it comes at a price and that price is what we fight to preserve in times of war, namely freedom. But to people like Joe the old saying “Ignorance is bliss”, I guess is the solution to life’s problems.

Update: By the way does anyone else see the sad irony on him openly espousing his nostalgia for World War II while in Israel? Hey Joe, news flash it wasn’t so good for many, not least of all the Jewish people whom Israel is a homeland for. Bad place to have World War II nostalgia. And while were on the subject of World War II, and you are condemning the media for reporting atrocities, if it wasn’t for newsreel coverage and documentation of the holocaust that according to you the media “doesn’t know the whole story of half the time”, the holocaust that is likely the most horrific atrocity of modern times would go undocumented and likely forgotten.
