Lets Ban Barbie, Lets Ban Barbie?

In off-beat, stupidity on March 5, 2009 by Editor Z

Is banning Barbie really the answer to our problems?

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) ā€” Just in time for Barbie’s 50th birthday, a West Virginia lawmaker wants to outlaw the doll.

Democratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge is proposing to ban the sale of the Mattel doll and others like her in West Virginia.

He says the dolls influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development.

He joins others who have criticized the doll over the years for promoting materialism and an unnatural body image.

Barbie turns 50 on March 9, and the toy maker has made big plans this year to mark the anniversary.

Well everyone can probably agree that our society is a bit too materialistic and self absorbed, but does anyone really think that banning a classic toy is a sound solution to this problem? Examples of physical and sexual beauty eclipsing emotional and intellectual virtues and talents in portrayals of women and yes sometimes men (although of course unlike Barbie’s “Ken” most of us guys actually have penises)are all around us. Splashed on the magazines you sport well sitting on the couch as your children play, on TV, and especially in advertisements everywhere. The problem is much more mammoth then just one toy. Besides, though I am no doctor it seems that childhood is a time of self-discovery. Yeah your little girl may not really be a princess in real life and she will figure that out someday, but that’s a part of growing up. The best solution is to when the time comes talk to your kids and remind them that beauty is not solely defined by appearance or materialism, but by attributes of their character and who they are, the talents they exhibit, and the contributions they make, not to ban a classic toy. If they do this whats next? Banning Batman because of his Gothic look and mood? Banning GI Joe to stop war? No its all bigger then a toy.
